Mason County Childcare Coalition Meeting Advances Workforce and Funding Efforts

Mason County, WA – February 20, 2026 – The Mason County Childcare Coalition gathered in February to continue advancing solutions that support working families and strengthen early learning across Mason County. Partners from higher education, public health, local government, economic development, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and federal agencies came together to focus on workforce development, funding opportunities, legislative updates, and community engagement.

A central theme of the meeting was strengthening the childcare workforce pipeline. South Puget Sound Community College shared information about the Early Achievers Grant and Early Childhood Education credential pathways available to individuals working in early learning. These programs provide financial and academic support to help providers meet state training requirements while continuing to work. With evolving credential deadlines at the state level, coalition members discussed the importance of making flexible, online education options accessible so Mason County can retain and grow its childcare workforce rather than lose capacity due to staffing barriers.

The coalition also received an update on the current legislative session and state budget environment. While recent revenue forecasts show some improvement, early learning funding remains an area requiring strong advocacy. Members were encouraged to stay engaged in the process and make their voices heard as budget decisions move forward.

In addition to state-level updates, federal funding opportunities were discussed. Representatives from USDA Rural Development outlined potential capital funding resources that may support childcare facility projects in eligible communities. While operational costs are not eligible, capital investments may include:

  • Construction, renovation, or expansion of childcare facilities

  • Safety upgrades and building improvements

  • Classroom equipment and playground infrastructure

The coalition explored how blended funding strategies could help bring future childcare facility projects to life in Mason County.

Shelton School District also provided an update on its Career and Technical Education pathways, including its Human Services track. Students are currently developing a preschool proposal designed to address local needs while providing hands-on learning opportunities for those interested in early childhood and human services careers. This initiative reflects the coalition’s broader commitment to building long-term workforce pathways that begin locally.

The meeting concluded with a review of results from the coalition’s recent childcare needs assessment survey, which gathered nearly 300 responses from families across the county. The findings reinforced that childcare access, affordability, and availability continue to impact families’ ability to work and pursue additional training or education. These results will help guide upcoming community engagement sessions focused on identifying actionable next steps related to workforce, facilities, funding, and policy.

Through continued collaboration and coordinated action, the Mason County Childcare Coalition remains committed to strengthening early learning infrastructure and building a childcare system that supports both families and employers throughout Mason County.
