Bakala State Farm Insurance joins MasonEDC membership!

Mason County, WA – April 6, 2026 – Melanie Bakala didn’t start her career in insurance, but looking back, every step led her exactly to where she is today.

Born and raised in Olympia, Melanie graduated from Capital High School before attending Pacific Lutheran University, where she earned her degree in Marketing Communications. She began her career shortly after at a community bank, where she interviewed with her college roommate’s uncle, starting in marketing and spending the next six years building a strong foundation. Over time, she realized she wanted to be more directly connected to the people she was serving, which led her into a role focused on organizational behavior. That work became a turning point, as she found a real passion for developing teams, supporting employees, and building strong internal culture.

In 2009, during a career transition, Melanie connected with a State Farm recruiter and knew right away it was the right fit. She aligned with the brand and the structure behind it, but getting there required a leap. She built a full business plan and presented it, all for the chance to move forward. After advancing through multiple rounds, including presenting in front of a nine person panel, she became an approved candidate.

From there, she made the intentional decision to bring her business to Shelton. She saw both a need, especially with a growing population preparing for retirement, and a community that felt welcoming and supportive. That combination mattered to her. On April 1, 2010, she opened her Shelton office, and sixteen years later, she continues to be deeply rooted in Mason County.

From the beginning, Melanie approached her work with a strong focus on community. She became involved with the local Chamber, Skookum Rotary, and has consistently volunteered at major events like OysterFest and others. Her belief in community-based marketing has always been simple, if you are going to do business in a place, you should also be investing in it and giving back to it.

That same mindset is reflected in the culture she has built within her office. Melanie leads with a focus on trust, growth, and support, creating an environment where her team feels valued and encouraged to succeed. She often hires people without prior experience and gives them the opportunity to learn, knowing that mistakes are part of the process. Her team is built on integrity and the understanding that everyone has each other’s backs. At the same time, she makes it a priority to celebrate their wins, whether through quarterly team outings or larger rewards when major goals are reached.

Her background in organizational behavior continues to shape how she leads, and the impact of that is clear. Five members of her team have gone on to become State Farm agents themselves, which speaks to her commitment to helping others grow in their careers.

Melanie’s work has been recognized both within State Farm and throughout the community. In her first year, she ranked among the top 100 new agents and has achieved Chairman’s Circle several times – an achievement that recognizes the top agents throughout the country. Locally, she has been named Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Boss of the Year, recognitions that reflect not only her success as a business owner but also the respect she has earned from her peers and her team.

Today, Bakala State Farm Insurance offers support well beyond auto and home coverage. Melanie and her team place a strong emphasis on education, helping individuals and families better understand retirement planning, life insurance, and financial protection so they can make informed decisions about their future. While she expanded with a second office in Thurston County in 2016, her Shelton office and the relationships she has built here remain central to her work.

Joining MasonEDC was a natural fit. Her commitment to community, her focus on supporting others, and her belief in building something that lasts align closely with the work we are doing across Mason County. We are proud to have Bakala State Farm Insurance as part of our membership and grateful for the leadership and care Melanie continues to bring to this community.
